Stock Sale Timing Calculator
Compare selling now (short-term) vs. waiting for long-term treatment
How to use: Enter the current stock price and your short-term / long-term tax rates in the configuration section. Lots held for over one year qualify for long-term capital gains. For short-term lots, the calculator shows a break-even future price — the lowest the stock can drop by the time it becomes long-term and still net you more than selling today at the higher short-term rate. Use the projected future price field to model what happens if the stock moves up or down before your lots become long-term.
NPV Analysis: The calculator also computes a net present value comparison — if you sell now and reinvest the after-tax proceeds, could your returns beat waiting for long-term treatment? Set the inflation rate and expected reinvestment return (or pick a preset) to compare.
All dollar figures are in today's dollars unless labeled otherwise. Future proceeds are discounted by the configured inflation rate so comparisons are apples-to-apples.
